On September 1, 2007, I went for a motorcycle ride with several members of my Triumph RAT pack, and we stopped off at the abandoned asbestos mine in Eden Mills, VT.
Approaching the mine, a mile or two out. Another view.
As we pulled into the mine's administrative area just inside the main gate, a Rottweiler came running up to us, but turned out to be super friendly. It belonged to the site's caretaker, who was initially waving us away, but as soon as we got off the bikes and went over to introduce ourselves, he became very friendly and allowed us to spend a short time walking around taking pictures. Unfortunately more extensive exploration is impossible at this time due to pressure from the EPA to keep people out of the site. If you choose to visit the site yourself, please respect this -- be polite to the caretaker, and don't put him in a position to get in trouble.
This mine at one point produced 96% of the country's asbestos. It was shut down in 1993.
Breaker building and conveyor.
Further down the breaker/conveyor chain.
Another view of breaker buildings and conveyors.
The mountain of tailings. This is the huge one seen in the approach pics, viewed from the other side. Note how erosion has formed gullies and washed out parts of the conveyor.
Water has filled the main pit. Note the color.
View along the conveyor toward the mountain of tailings.
The maw of the rock crusher. Freshly mined ore would be dropped in here to be crushed and then transported along the conveyors pictured earlier.
Our bikes parked in the administrative area.
Later in the ride we stopped at the motorcycle shrine in Colebrook, NH.
